Church Websites Attract Young People

As I mentioned in yesterday's post, a website can help churches by bringing in new people. (If you haven't already, go read that post!) Today we're going to look at a second reason why your church should have a website: it attracts young people.



Statistics show that 100% of U.S. adults between the ages of 18 and 29 use the internet. And what's more, 48% of this age group uses the internet almost constantly throughout any given day.

What does all this mean? 

Well, it means that a big portion of the average young person's life is spent online. This is a key connecting point for any church.

Your church can attract young people simply by establishing an online presence. Through a website, your church can enter the world of so-called "screenagers" and create a context in which you can share the good news of Christ with that age group. This is an important part of what it means to be a Christian - to reach out to people in their own context.

Christ Jesus is the perfect example of one who had this missionary mindset. He "did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men" (Philippians 2:6-7, ESV). He came to us, reached out to us in our context, entered into our environment so that we could be saved. Throughout His ministry on earth, He spent a lot of time hanging out with tax collectors and sinners (Luke 5:30; 7:34).

Christ's example has implications for individual members of the body, as well as for the entire body itself. Christians should seek to permeate every facet of society and culture for the sake of the gospel, to "become all things to all people, that by all means [we] might save some" (1 Corinthians 9:22).

So because young people spend a large portion of their time online, your church should find ways to interact with them online. A website is one excellent way to begin doing this. The internet is a main highway for society - especially young people. And your church website can be a strategically placed billboard both to reach out to young people and invite them in.

One final thought.     

A website can help your church attract young people by airdropping your church into their circle of vision. But it also does another important thing. Because a website gives your church access to the "world of young people," it automatically makes what you're doing that much more relevant to them. For this reason, a website helps solidify the message that Christianity and the church are relevant to anyone at any age.

This may be a small point, but an important one nonetheless. The ninth reason why your church should invest in a website is because it establishes a resource center . A website is an excellent place to set up resources and information specifically for your church members, but also for other people. Once a website is in place, the next step for your church might be to expand it. You may already have basic visitor information like contact info, service times and mission statement. But there's so much more you can add. Let me give you some details. Your church can store all kinds of helpful material on a website that may otherwise be unavailable to church members. Here are some specific examples of what might be included in this resource center: Membership Directory Your church might have a printed membership directory with the pictures, names and contact info for each member. My church does, and it's really nice to have! But there are a few problems with these printed
